Woodworking is the most searched class in Austin on our list, and the hardest to find a seat in. Studio classes fill up weeks out and cost real money for a few hours on a table saw. Meanwhile Austin is full of garage woodworkers, furniture makers and framers who would happily walk a beginner through the basics in exchange for something they want to learn.
That is the swap. You find a woodworker on Swapfolk who wants what you know, you meet in their shop, and they teach you. You teach them your thing in return.
Session one is almost always safety and the basics of the tools in the room, followed by one small project you can finish and take home. From there it depends on what you want to build. Most beginners are making a shelf, a coffee table or a planter box within a month of weekly swaps. Shop access is part of the deal, which is the thing a beginner cannot buy easily.
Garage hobbyists, people who build furniture on the side, finish carpenters and a few people with full studios. The ones we hear from want Spanish, help with a website or ads for their side business, photography for their work, and fitness coaching.
